Volleyball Opens 2012 Slate With Split

SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. (Sept. 8, 2012) - The Mount Holyoke College volleyball team opened its 2012 season at Mildred S. Howard Gymnasium with a win and a loss this afternoon. The Lyons opened the day with a hard-fought 3-2 victory over the University of St. Joseph before falling 3-0 in the final match of the day to Amherst College.

Martina Kneifel In the match against the Lord Jeffs (2-0, 0-0 NESCAC), first-year outside hitter Emma Sweeting collected five kills and eight digs to lead the way for the Lyons in her collegiate debut. Sophomore defensive specialist Kaleen Iwema added four kills and 19 digs, while classmate Martina Kneifel, an outside hitter, added 11 digs and a block assist.

First year setter Gaby Harrigan added nine assists and six digs, while junior middle hitter Kristina Weld chipped in with two kills, two assists, six digs and a block assist.

Mount Holyoke (1-1, 0-0 NEWMAC) will kick off its NEWMAC slate at home against Wellesley on Tuesday at 7:00 p.m.
