Volleyball Shoulders Tough Losses in Final Day of Seven Sisters Tourney

BRYN MAWR, Pa. (Oct. 7, 2012) - The Mount Holyoke College volleyball team shouldered a pair of tough losses to close out action at the Seven Sisters Championship, hosted by Bryn Mawr. The Lyons fell 3-0 to Vassar College in the morning opener before suffering a 3-0 defeat at the hands of the host Owls in game two.

Vassar jumped out to the quick advantage, taking the first set by a 25-7 mragin. The Lyons battled back in the second set, but could not close the gap as the Brewers won 25-12 in set two and 25-9 in the final frame.

The Brewers were led by Brittany Stopa, who had a game-best six kills. Rose Carman added 11 assists, while Hilary Koenigs had 12 assists. Chloe Hallum chipped in with a game-best eight digs.

For Mount Holyoke, sophomore Kaleen Iwema had three kills and six digs. First year Emma Sweeting had a squad-best seven digs, while Stephany Yang posted three assists.

Game two saw the Lyons take on the host Owls. After falling 25-12 and 25-16 to open the match, Mount Holyoke fought back in the final set.  They Lyons posted 11 kills in the frame, pushing it to the brink before ultimately falling, 25-21.

Sweeting had a squad-best nine kills and 10 digs, while Yang added 16 assists and eight digs. Junior captain Kristina Weld added three kills, two digs and a match-high three service aces.

The Owls saw Rachel Ofili record a match-best 17 kills, while Danielle Preziuso had a game-high 35 assists. Ellen Chiu added nine kills, while Zoe Holman chipped in with 17 digs.

For their efforts, Sweeting and Yang were both named to the All-Tournament Team.

The Lyon are right back in action on Tuesday, when they return to NEWMAC play at home against Wheaton at the Mildred S. Howard Gymnasium at 7pm.
