Volleyball Posts 3-0 Victory at Norwich

NORTHFIELD, Vt. — Emma Sweeting totaled a match-high 11 kills to lead the visiting Lyons of Mount Holyoke College to a 3-0 non-conference win against the Cadets of Norwich University on Saturday afternoon at Andrews Gymnasium.  With the win, the Lyons improve to 3-6 on the season, while the loss drops the Cadets to 6-6.

The Lyons clinched the win with game scores of 25-13, 25-20, and 25-18.  After trailing 2-0, Norwich opened the third game with a 5-1 advantage and traded points with the Lyons until Sweeting served nine-straight points, giving Mount Holyoke the 13-8 lead.

The Cadets were led offensively by MaryRose Meany (Goshen, N.Y.), who totaled six kills on 17 attempts with just one error. Haley Vermes (Westborough, Mass.) added five kills and a team-high 13 digs for Norwich, while Corinne Baita (Rochester, N.H.) dished out a team-best 14 assists while adding seven digs.

In addition to Sweeting's 11 kills, she also aided the Lyons with five services aces and nine digs.  Martina Kneifel added nine kills and nine digs and Kristina Weld added seven kills on 20 attempts with just one error. Kaleen Iwema recorded a match-high 21 digs, while Stephany Yang totaled a match-high 23 assists.

The Lyons posted .189 attack percentage over three games while holding the Cadets to a negative attack percentage.  Mount Holyoke also totaled nine service aces while Norwich recorded just two.

The Cadets return to action tomorrow, when they host Maine Maritime and Southern Vermont for a non-conference tri-match at Andrews Gymnasium.  Mount Holyoke returns to the court on Tuesday, when it hosts NEWMAC-rival, Springfield at 7pm.
