Volleyball Falls in NEWMAC Action at Coast Guard

NEW LONDON, Conn. (Oct. 16, 2012) -Senior Keriann Mason and sophomore Leigh Anne Brazier each had eight kills to lead the way as Coast Guard posted a 3-0 win over Mount Holyoke in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) volleyball action on Little Bear Night. The win also tied a school-record 26th straight home victory for the Bears.

Coast Guard won by game scores of 25-14, 25-15, 25-21 to snap a three-game losing streak.

The Bears, who have won 26 straight home matches dating back to the 2010 season, improve to 15-11 overall and 5-2 in conference play. Mount Holyoke drops to 3-15 overall and 0-7 in the NEWMAC.

In the opening set, Coast Guard jumped out to quick 8-1 lead. Mount Holyoke closed to within three at 11-8, but freshman Maggie Hine served three straight points to give the Bears a 14-8 lead and the Bears won it 25-14.

In the second set, Coast Guard led 16-11 before the Lyons scored three straight to pull to within 16-14. The Bears scored seven straight and nine of the final after a timeout en route to a 25-15 win.

The Lyons led 5-1 in the third set , but Coast Guard scored seven of the next nine to tie it 8-8. With the score tied at 11-11, the Bears ran off six straight for a 17-11 lead. Mount Holyoke used a 6-1 run to close to within 20-19, but the Bears scored five of the final seven for the victory.

Mason and junior Samantha Marmolejo each had 13 digs to lead the team while senior Catherine Walker added seven kills and a team-high four blocks. Senior Karen Matic led the Bears with 21 assists. Freshman Emily Gilland had 11 digs while sophomore Elise Sako finished with ten digs in the win.

Sophomore Stephany Yang led the Lyons with 14 assists and 13 digs while freshman Emma Sweeting led the way with nine kills.
