MIDDLETOWN, Conn. -- The Mount Holyoke track and field team didn't have a full team competing at Saturday's outdoor season-opening meet, the Wesleyan University Swanson Classic, but the Lyons got the season off to a strong start with several impressive performances, including a new team record.

The non-scoring meet featured athletes from many teams including Amherst, Bowdoin, Bates, Manhattanville, RPI, Westfield State, UMass-Dartmouth, Connecticut College, Fitchburg State, Lasell, Medgar Evers, Regis, and Roger Williams.

On her sixth and final attempt of the day, Mount Holyoke sophomore Ioanna Tsoni (Athens, Greece) triple jumped a career-best 11.28 meters (37'0"), breaking her own team record by a centimeter and placing second among 18 competitors at the meet.

Competing earlier in the long jump at an outdoor meet for the first time as a collegian, Tsoni had a top effort of 5.41 meters (17'9") to place third out of 24 competitors. Tsoni, who holds Mount Holyoke's indoor long jump record, took over third place on Mount Holyoke's all-time performance list in the outdoor long jump.

Other notable performances by the Lyons included:

  • Junior Em Tetzlaff (Bath, Maine) had a career-best hammer throw of 36.79 meters (120'8") to place eighth out of 30 competitors in the event. Tetzlaff passed Kara Setal (2022) and Maria Smith (2004) in moving from 10th place to eighth on Mount Holyoke's all-time performance list.
  • Senior Elizabeth Gerbi (Orono, Maine) finished second among 10 runners in the 10,000 meters, in 39:39.32. Senior Tessa Lancaster (Mansfield, Mass.) placed fifth in the same event in 40:45.67.
