Track and field takes fourth place at Tufts Smith-King Invitational

MEDFORD, Mass. -- The Mount Holyoke indoor track and field team used 13 scoring performances to place fourth among seven teams Saturday at the Branwen Smith-King Invitational at Tufts University.

Host Tufts led team scoring with 259 points, followed by Springfield (140.5), Bridgewater State (87), Mount Holyoke (76.5), Emmanuel (55), Regis (27), and Fitchburg State (5).

Scoring and other notable performances for Mount Holyoke included:

  • Sophomore Ioanna Tsoni (Athens, Greece) placed second in the long jump (5.26 meters / 17'3.25"), third in the 60 hurdles (9.28 seconds), and sixth in the finals of the 60 meters in a career-best 8.09 seconds, scoring a combined 17 team points for the Lyons. Tsoni remains second all-time in the 60 meters at Mount Holyoke.
  • Seniors Elizabeth Gerbi (Orono, Maine) and Tessa Lancaster (Mansfield, Mass.) finished 1-2 out of 11 runners in the 3,000 meters, crossing the finish line in 11:03.95 and 11:05.62, respectively, for a combined 18 team points.
  • First-year Katherine Herring (Lebanon, N.H.) placed first among eight competitors in the 800 meters (2:45.19).
  • Senior Greta Trapp (La Crosse, Wis.) placed fifth out of 13 runners in the mile, finishing in 5:36.03.
  • Junior Katie Earle (East Kingston, N.H.) placed fourth out of 11 runners in the 3,000 meters (11:44.10).
  • Sophomore Dalia Luckhardt (Cerritos, Calif.) took fifth place among 16 competitors in the 200 meters in 1:05.70.
  • Junior Sarah West (Concord, N.H.) finished fifth in the 3,000 meters in 11:44.29.
  • Sophomore Anjali Phadnis (San Marcos, Calif.) placed sixth out of 16 in the 200 meters (1:05.75).
  • First-year Sachi Robinson (Staten Island, N.Y.) took sixth place in the 600 meters (1:47.26).
  • Senior Aria Mallare (Chicago, Ill.) tied for eighth place in the high jump (1.41m / 4'7.5") and made the finals in the long jump (4.56m / 14'11.5).
  • Senior Kim Beaver (Agawam, Mass.) placed ninth and just out of the scoring in the 1,000 meters but qualified for the New England Division III Championships with her time of 3:11.65.
  • Mount Holyoke's 4x400 relay team of Robinson, Trapp, Phadnis, and Beaver became the 10th-fastest in team history in the event, finishing second out of three teams in 4:22.58.
  • Junior Kiera McLaughlin (Keene, N.H.) led six Lyons competing in the shot put, placing 16th out of 29 overall at 7.99 meters (26'2.75").

The Lyons next compete at the Wesleyan University Invitational, Saturday Jan. 25 at 10am.
