Soccer Suffers 1-0 Setback in Season Opener

SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. - A 45th-minute penalty kick gave Nichols College a 1-0 win over Mount Holyoke College in non-conference play at the Mount Holyoke Soccer Field. First-year forward Meghan Dunn (Dudley, Mass. / Shepherd Hill) scored from the spot with 51 seconds left in the first half as the Bison won their first game of the year. Mount Holyoke is now 0-1.

The Lyons used their accurate passing game and were able to keep the ball around the Nichols net, with senior forward Kara Singleton (Parsonsfield, Maine / Sacopee Valley) impressing with her quick play as she beat the Bison to the ball. However, Mount Holyoke was unable to foil Nichols goalkeeper Kelly English (Mansfield, Mass. / Mansfield), who made two saves to pick up the shutout.

The Lyons held the edge in play in the second half, generating four corner kicks, but could not find an equalizer.

For the Lyons, senior Mackenzie Randall (Harwinton, Conn. / Forman) suffered the loss, making one save.

The Lyons directed four shots at English, with senior Cassidy Robinson (Lebanon, N.H. / Lebanon) leading the way with two. Dunn had a pair of shots to lead Nichols.

Nichols returns to action on Tuesday, when they host Johnson & Wales at 4 p.m. The Lyons are back in action on Thursday, when they host Lyndon State. Kickoff at the Mount Holyoke Soccer Field is set for 6 p.m.
