Soccer Suffers 1-0 Loss to Husson

SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. – Husson University saw first year Leah Hibbad score into the upper left corner at the 20th minute and the Eagles held on for a 1-0 victory over Mount Holyoke College on Saturday afternoon. With the win, Husson moves to 2-1 on the season, while the Lyons are now 1-2 overall.

The visiting Eagles started the game with an early chance as Hibbad (Portsmouth, R.I./Portsmouth) dribbled down the right side but found her route cut short as MHC keeper Mackenzie Randall (Harwinton, Conn./Forman) made the save just 1:01 into the frame.

Mount Holyoke had its first major opportunity to get on board in the 11th minute after senior Andrea Portillo (San Jose, Calif./Downtown College Prep.) ducked past the Husson defenders into the zone. She passed the ball to classmate Cassidy Robinson (Lebanon, N.H./Lebanon) on the right side but the shot was saved by first year goalie Aimee Hartwell (Nottingham, N.H./Dover).

Hibbad's next effort on net proved to be the difference as she made her way around two defenders before launching the ball into the upper left corner for the goal and a 1-0 lead for the Eagles.

Though the second half saw several chances, including standout opportunities from Hibbad and Robinson, neither team could penetrate the others defenses for an additional score over the final 45 minutes.

Husson held the game's advantage in shots with an 11-5 margin, including a 9-3 edge in the second half. The two teams broke even on corner kicks with a 3-3 split.

In goal, Husson's Hartwell made two saves to pick up the victory, while MHC's Randall posted eight saves in the loss for the Lyons.

Mount Holyoke returns to action on Wednesday when it travels to Amherst for a 5pm contest against the Jeffs. Husson is also back in action on Wednesday at the University of New England at 6:30pm.
