Led by eighth-year head coach Kanae Haneishi, the Mount Holyoke College soccer team posted a 6-12-0 record in 2014. The Lyons also had a 2-8 mark in NEWMAC action.
The Lyons opened the season on a strong note, rebounding from a tough 1-0 loss to Nichols for a 4-2 victory against Lyndon State. That victory saw senior forward Kara Singleton net a pair of goals, while sophomore goalie Zoe Marshall was forced to make just one save.
Following a pair of tough defeats at the hands of Husson and Amherst, the Lyons were back in the win column with back-to-back victories. MHC recorded a 4-2 win against Southern Vermont, taking down the Mountaineers behind two goals each from senior forward Cassidy Robinson and first year midfielder Suz Rose.
The Lyons followed that up with a 2-1 double-overtime victory against Western New England. The victory not only saw Robinson score in the extra session for the win, but it also marked the first triumph for the Lyons over the Golden Bears in the all-time series.
Mount Holyoke suffered a tough stretch of losses at the mid-way point of the season, but rebounded with a 3-0 non-conference victory against Bay Path. That game saw Singleton score a pair of goals, while Robinson added the third.
After a loss at MIT, the Lyons gained momentum, picking up a pair of NEWMAC victories at home. MHC opened with a 2-1 overtime win against Clark on October 7, as the Lyons battled back from a 1-0 first half deficit. Singleton tied it mid-way through the second half and later added the game winner just 3:29 into the extra session for the victory.
Robinson then powered the Lyons to their second straight win, netting the game-winner at the 73:50 mark to give MHC its first win over Wellesley – a 2-1 score – since the 2004 season. Despite the momentum, the Lyons closed out the season on an 0-5 run, including a narrow 1-0 loss to WPI in the regular season finale.
Leading the Lyons was Robinson, who recorded a team-best 10 goals with four assists for 24 points. She also had a squad-high 46 shots, including 31 on goal, with a team-leading three game-winning tallies. Singleton posted 14 points on six goals and two assists, while first year midfielder Liz Rose had a goal with three assists for five points.
In goal, the Lyons saw two goalies trade action over the course of the season, led by Marshall, who posted a 5-5 record. She sported a 2.09 goals against average and a .774 save percentage, stopping 72 shots with 21 goals allowed. Senior Mackenzie Randall (1-7), finished with a 2.20 GAA and a .763 save percentage with 58 saves and 18 goals surrendered.
Robinson, who finished the season ranked third in the NEWMAC in goals and seventh in points, was a two-time NEWMAC Offensive Performer of the Week selection. At season's end, she was tabbed to the NEWMAC All-Conference Second Team for her efforts.
Academically, the Lyons continued to see solid efforts off the field as seniors Hannah Yee and Emily Quinlan, along with juniors Ally Madden and Jessica Schiller were all named to the NEWMAC Academic All-Conference team.
