ALBANY, N.Y. -- The Mount Holyoke College rowing team competed in its first regatta of the academic year Sunday at the Head of the Hudson, with its top two eights taking first and second places in a three-boat race against St. Lawrence.

Coxed by first-year Tobin Mayo-Kiely (Anchorage, Alaska), the Lyons' designated second varsity eight outpaced the first varsity eight in Mount Holyoke's three-boat race against St. Lawrence University, winning with a time of 11:44.86 over a lengthy 3,200 meters.

Coxed by sophomore Miranda Hull (Baltimore, Md.), the Lyons' 1V8 finished second in 12:48.96, defeating St. Lawrence (12:54.49) by more than six seconds.

"We had a tough week of practice, but they've been supporting each other well," said sixth-year head coach Seth Hussey. "Although there's a lot of work still to be done, it's nice to put down a couple solid pieces early in the season."

A third Mount Holyoke eight, coxed by first-year Sarah Plotkin (Duxbury, Mass.), finished second in a head-to-head novice race against Lawrence, 13:49.49 to 15:34.43.

The Lyons next compete Sunday, Oct. 2 at Head of the Riverfront Regatta, out of Riverside Park in Hartford, Conn.
