Rowing shows well in six-college regatta at Skidmore

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. -- In its first racing since October, the Mount Holyoke College rowing team had a strong opening day of its spring season on Saturday, highlighted by the Lyons' first varsity eight taking third place out of six boats in the 1V8 race, at a six-college regatta hosted by Skidmore College on Fish Creek.

Mount Holyoke's first varsity eight, coxed by first-year Tobin Mayo-Kiely (Anchorage, Alaska), was a very close third out of six boats, one second behind Middlebury (7:20) with a time of 7:21 over 2,000 meters. Skidmore won the race in 7:12. After the Lyons there was a significant gap to fourth-place Vassar (7:58), followed by St. John Fisher (8:04) and Nazareth (8:30).

The Lyons 2V8, coxed by sophomore Jennifer Butler (Nashville, Tenn.), and its 3V8, coxed by sophomore Miranda Hull (Baltimore, Md.), both entered the 2V8 race, with the MHC 2V8 taking third place out of five boats in 8:09, followed in fourth place by Vassar (8:15) and the Mount Holyoke 3V8 (8:25). Skidmore won the race, which was shortened to 1,800 meters after a breakage restart, in 7:12, followed by Middlebury in 7:17.
