BOSTON -- The Mount Holyoke College rowing team's first varsity eight placed 29th out of 36 boats in Women's Collegiate Eights Sunday afternoon at the Head of the Charles.

Mount Holyoke's lone entry at the renowned regatta finished the winding course on the Charles River in 14:55.151, the 29th fastest time among 36 boats in the division, which included teams from Division II and Canada. The Grand Valley 1V8 was 28th in 14:48.679 and the WPI 2V8 placed 30th in 14:59.760. Mercyhurst won the event in 13:43.826.

"It was a tough go out there. I think we're always hoping to finish with our best race and when that doesn't happen it's hard not to be disappointed," said Seth Hussey, who was coaching his final regatta after six years as Mount Holyoke's head coach.

"In a lot of ways success at the Charles always requires a bit of luck, and we couldn't quite find any out there... getting tangled up with Hamilton at Weeks (Bridge) and then pushed out under Eliot (Bridge)... that's just how it goes sometimes. I'm proud of all the effort and commitment that has gone into making this group a team."

Hussey is resigning from Mount Holyoke to pursue interests outside of college athletics; a search is under way for Mount Holyoke's next head rowing coach.
