WORCESTER, Mass. (Feb. 8, 2012) – The Mount Holyoke College basketball team suffered a 53-36 setback to NEWMAC foe WPI this evening at Harrington Auditorium. First year forward Amber Legare set the tone for the Lyons with eight points, eight rebounds and a pair of blocked shots.

Mount Holyoke also received solid production from junior guard Angelica Pascual, who tallied nine points, five assists and four rebounds. Senior forward Tricia Chase collected seven points and eight rebounds, while classmate Christine Chancy pulled down 11 boards. The Lyons were limited to 27.8% (15-54) shooting from the floor. They finished with a 41-30 advantage on the glass.

Junior forward Theresa Logan piled up 22 points on 9-of-14 shooting from the floor to pace WPI. She was joined in double figures by classmate Cindy Chelius, who totaled 10 points. Both players came up with six rebounds for the Engineers, who knocked down 42.3% (22-52) of their shots from the field and 88.9% (8-9) of their free throws.

WPI (8-14, 6-9 NEWMAC) exploded for 11 unanswered points over a span of four minutes in the middle of the first half to gain control. The hosts enjoyed a 17-4 edge after a jumper by Logan at the 7:51 mark and took a 23-13 lead into the locker room.

Mount Holyoke sliced the deficit to 29-23 on a jumper by Pascual with 12:46 remaining in regulation, but WPI answered with an 11-4 run and never looked back. Logan recorded 14 of her 22 points after the intermission.

With their win, the Engineers completed the season sweep of the Lyons and jumped into a tie for sixth place in the NEWMAC standings. They have come out on top in each of their last four outings to move into postseason contention.

Mount Holyoke (4-17, 2-13 NEWMAC) will resume its NEWMAC schedule in front of its home crowd against the Coast Guard Academy on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. The Lyons will be taking part in the Play 4Kay initiative to raise awareness in the fight against breast cancer. Proceeds from admissions fees to the contest will be donated to the Kay Yow Cancer Fund. In addition, fans are encouraged to wear pink and contribute to research initiatives.
