Basketball Falls to Nationally-Ranked Babson

SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. (Dec. 3, 2011) – Senior forward Nicki Wurdeman racked up 30 points and 11 rebounds to lead the Babson College basketball team to a 63-33 victory over Mount Holyoke College in NEWMAC action at the Mildred S. Howard Gymnasium this afternoon. The Beavers entered the contest ranked 17th in the latest D3hoops.com National Poll. They have now won 47 straight games against league foes.

Nicole DeMarchena Mount Holyoke was paced by sophomore guard Annabel Barrett, who posted team highs of eight points, four rebounds and three assists. Senior forward Tricia Chase also scored eight points for the Lyons, who were limited to 26.9% (14-52) shooting from the field. First year forward Nicole DeMarchena came off the bench to add four steals.

Wurdeman was joined in double figures by junior center Sarah Collins, who recorded 17 points, 10 rebounds and three blocked shots. As a team, Babson knocked down 51.1% (24-47) of its shots from the floor and 70.0% (14-20) of its free throws. The Beavers finished with an overwhelming 40-14 advantage in the paint and outrebounded Mount Holyoke 41-24. They piled up18 assists on 24 made baskets.

The guests used a 23-1 run in the middle third of the game to create separation and led by as many as 32 points on two occasions in the second half.

Both squads will resume their NEWMAC schedules on Tuesday at 7:00 p.m. Mount Holyoke (1-5, 0-2 NEWMAC) will host Clark University, while Babson (5-1, 2-0 NEWMAC) will visit Wellesley College.
