Wellesley Uses Balanced Attack to Top Basketball

WELLESLEY, Mass. (Jan. 4, 2012) – The Mount Holyoke College basketball team fell 59-39 to NEWMAC foe Wellesley College this evening at the Keohane Sports Center. Junior guard Angelica Pascual set the tone for the Lyons with 11 points.

Amber Legare Mount Holyoke also received solid production from first year forward Amber Legare, who matched her career high with 12 rebounds to go with six points. Junior guard Jasmine Brown dished out a career-best six assists. Meanwhile, Annabel Barrett and Christine Chancy chipped in with five points apiece. The Lyons were limited to 27.3% (15-55) shooting from the floor and got to the line just six times.

Four players reached double digits in the scoring column for Wellesley, which knocked down 34.5% (19-55) of its shots from the field and 70.8% (17-24) of its free throws. Sophomore guard Leslie Leong posted a double-double on 11 points and 10 rebounds to lead the way for the Blue. Meghan Sargent, Elisha Orama and Courtney Jackson tallied ten points apiece, while Malia Maier chipped in with eight points and five assists. Wellesley finished with a 42-38 advantage on the glass and turned 22 Mount Holyoke turnovers into 29 points at the other end.

The Lyons enjoyed an 8-3 advantage following a three-pointer by Barrett in the early going and led 16-13 after a Pascual layup at the 10:13 mark.

From there, it was all Wellesley (4-6, 3-2 NEWMAC). The Blue closed out the first half on a 17-3 run to gain control of the game. They took a 30-19 cushion into the locker room and led by as many as 23 points down the stretch.

Mount Holyoke (2-9, 0-5 NEWMAC) will resume its NEWMAC schedule at Wheaton College on Saturday. Tip-off is slated for 2:00 p.m.
