SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. -- Back-to-back goals by Samantha Thebarge two minutes apart in the third quarter increased Thomas College's lead to a commanding 3-0 as the visiting Terriers came away with a 3-1 non-conference victory over the Mount Holyoke College field hockey team Saturday afternoon on the MHC Turf.
Thomas (1-1), a day after playing its season opener, kept the ball in the Mount Holyoke end for the majority of the first three quarters. The Terriers owned a 5-1 advantage in penalty corners in the first quarter, 7-0 in the third quarter, and 19-7 for the game. Thomas had an 8-0 edge in shots in the third quarter and 24-10 for the game.
Mount Holyoke took four of the game's first five shots, but Thomas surged in the final two minutes of the first quarter, earning four penalty corners and taking four shots on net in that time. Thomas carried its pressure over into the second quarter, earning three more corners and attempting five unanswered shots before scoring the game's first goal, with Tatiana Roque feeding Hilary Howard for the score in a two-on-one situation.
The score remained 1-0 until the sixth minute of the third quarter, when Thebarge scored on a feed from Julia Reny on a penalty corner. The same two players connected again in the 38th minute to make it 3-0.
Mount Holyoke closed the gap to 3-1 on an outside shot by sophomore Linnea Alsted (Crownsville, Md.), after she took the insertion pass from senior captain Jayonna Montigny (Enfield, Conn.) on a Lyons penalty corner.
Alsted stood out defensively as well for Mount Holyoke, while senior captain Rachel Katzenberg (Reisterstown, Md.) made 12 saves in a strong effort in goal.
Elise Syphers made four saves for Thomas.
Mount Holyoke returns to action on Saturday Sept. 7 at 1pm, as the Lyons host UMaine-Farmington.
