  • 2012-13 Field Hockey Year in Review

    In a season that most would deem a rebuilding year, the Mount Holyoke field hockey team defied the odds and returned to the NEWMAC Tournament for the 14th straight season. Despite the loss of nine seniors from the 2011 squad, longtime head coach Andy Whitcomb relied on strong senior leadership and solid young talent to bring her team back to the playoffs.

    The Mount Holyoke College field hockey team has been recognized by the 2012 Gladiator by SGI/National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) as one of the top academic teams in Division III. The Lyons, who have a team grade point average of 3.17, also saw nine student-athletes named to the NFHCA National Academic Squad.
  • Kilburn Named to NFHCA All-Region Second Team

    The National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) has announced their 2012 Longstreth/NFHCA All-Region honorees and Mount Holyoke College student-athlete Kirsten Kilburn was among those selected. Kilburn was named to the New England East Region Second Team for her efforts this season.
  • Three Named to Field Hockey All-Conference Team

    The NEWMAC Field Hockey All-Conference Teams were recently announced and Mount Holyoke College student-athletes Kirsten Kilburn, Angelica Pascual and Stephanie Pascual have all been recognized. Kilburn was selected to the league’s First Team, while the Pascual sisters earned Second Team honors. It marks the first year-end honor for all three players.

    Powered by a goal in each half, the Wellesley College field hockey team posted a 3-2 victory over Mount Holyoke College in the Quarterfinal game of the NEWMAC Tournament. The third-seeded Blue move to 12-7 on the season and advance to Saturday’s semifinal round against second-seeded MIT at Babson (3pm). The Lyons conclude their season with a 7-10 record.

    Sophomore forward Caroline Malone (Walpole, Mass.) scored twice and first-year forward Melanie Jordan (Westford, Mass.) chipped in with a goal and an assist as Babson College used four second half tallies to push past Mount Holyoke College 4-1 in NEWMAC field hockey action on Saturday afternoon at MacDowell Field.

    Senior forward Angelica Pascual tallied a goal and an assist to lead Mount Holyoke College to a 3-0 victory over Westfield State University in a non-conference field goal hockey on Tuesday evening at Alumni Field. With the win, the Lyons moved to 7-8 on the season, while the Owls slipped to 10-6 overall.

    Senior forward Meg McHugh scored just 50 seconds into overtime to lift Springfield College to a 3-2 overtime victory against Mount Holyoke College in NEWMAC field hockey action on Saturday. With the win, the Pride move to 7-8 on the season and are now 5-2 in conference play. The Lyons slip to 6-8 overall and are now 2-5 in the NEWMAC.

    Mel Melkonian scored her nation-leading 26th goal of the season with just 39 seconds left to lift host Clark University to a thrilling 3-2 win over Mount Holyoke College in NEWMAC field hockey action on Tuesday night. The win bumps Clark’s record to 9-5, while Mount Holyoke dips to 6-7 overall. Both teams are 2-4 in league play and in search of one of the final spots left for the upcoming NEWMAC Tournament.

    The Wellesley College field hockey team blanked visiting Mount Holyoke, 3-0, in NEWMAC action on Saturday afternoon in Wellesley. The win lifts the Blue to 9-5 overall, 4-1 in the NEWMAC, while the Lyons even their mark to 6-6, with a 2-3 record in conference play.

    Powered by a pair of goals from sophomore Kirsten Kilburn, the Mount Holyoke College field hockey team defeated Simmons College by a 3-0 margin in non-conference action at the MHC Turf Field. With the victory, the Lyons improve to 6-5 on the season, while the Sharks move to 4-11 overall.

    Trailing after the first half of action, Mount Holyoke College battled back to tie the game, but it wasn’t enough as the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) came away with a 2-1 victory in NEWMAC field hockey action on Saturday afternoon. With the victory, the Engineers moved to 11-2 on the season and are now 4-1 in conference play. The Lyons slip to 5-5 overall and 2-2 in the NEWMAC.

    Stephanie Symecko registered her fifth goal of the season and Liz Dufresne notched her second shutout on the year as WPI defeated visiting Mount Holyoke in NEWMAC field hockey action on Tuesday night. With the win, the Crimson and Gray improve to 4-6 overall and 2-2 in the conference while Mount Holyoke falls to 5-4 on the year and 2-1 in NEWMAC play.

    Senior forward Angelica Pascual reached three program records, tallying five of Mount Holyoke College's six goals to lead the Lyons to a 6-0 victory over Wheaton College in NEWMAC action on Saturday afternoon. With the victory, MHC moves to 5-3 overall and 2-0 in conference play, while the visiting Lyons slip to 2-7 and 0-3 in the NEWMAC.

The MHC Lyons and the Wheaton Lyons are meeting for the 23rd time with Wheaton holding a 20-10-2 edge in the all-time series. Following today’s game, Mount Holyoke travels to WPI on Tuesday for a 7pm match against the Engineers. Wheaton is also in action on Tuesday at Springfield at 7pm.
  • Field Hockey Tripped Up at Wesleyan

    Wesleyan got first-half goals from sophomore Amber Bruckner and junior Blair Ingraham to gain control of the scoreboard, then played Mount Holyoke even on the scoreboard in the second half with each team scoring once as the Cardinals extended their control of the series against the Lyons to 26-6-2 all-time with a 3-1 win.

    Kirsten Kilburn scored a goal and assisted on two others to lead visiting Mount Holyoke to a 4-0 victory Tuesday over Western New England in non-conference field hockey action at Golden Bear Stadium under windy conditions. The Lyons improve to 4-2 while the Golden Bears dip to 2-4 after making their home debut this season.

The Lyons move to 3-2 on the season and 1-0 in conference play, while the Pioneers slip to 2-3 overall and 1-0 in the NEWMAC.

    Castleton State College put up a six-goal, first half rally enroute to a 7-2 victory over Mount Holyoke College on a rainy Saturday afternoon at the MHC Turf Field. The Spartans improve to 2-1 with the win, while the Lyons shoulder their first loss of the season and are now 2-1.

Mount Holyoke has won each of the past two meetings, including a 4-0 victory over the Bison in 2011.
