SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. (Sept. 29, 2012) – Senior forward Angelica Pascual reached three program records in tallying five of Mount Holyoke College's six goals to lead the Lyons to a 6-0 victory over Wheaton College in NEWMAC action on Saturday afternoon. With the victory, MHC moves to 5-3 overall and 2-0 in conference play, while the visiting Lyons slip to 2-7 and 0-3 in the NEWMAC.
Pascual set a new single-season record with her five goals, eclipsing the all-time mark of four, set by Shara Robertson against Elms in 2008. She also set the single-game record for points with 10 - overtaking Robertson's mark of nine from 2008. Additionally, Pascual's 16 shots in the game tied Robertson's all-time single-game mark.
Pascual (Lawrence, Mass./Proctor Academy) scored on a breakaway at 10:26 to put Mount Holyoke on top in the first half. Picking up a loose ball near the edge of the midfield, Pascual ducked around a Wheaton defender and beat the goaltender on the right side for the shot.
Despite a large advantage in shots for the first half, as the homestanding Lyons held a 22-2 edge, MHC could not get another shot in past sophomore goalie Madison Wolters (Marston Mills, Mass./Barnstable), who stopped 13 shots through the first 35 minutes.
In the second half, sophomore midfielder Kirsten Kilburn (North Branford, Conn./North Branford) started a flurry for Mount Holyoke as she took a rocketing shot from just inside the top of the arc that sailed past the keeper at 40:28.
Mount Holyoke then went work in the offensive zone, tallying just over two minutes later after first year Sarah LaQuerre (Old Orchard Beach, Maine/Cheverus) fed it into the middle, allowing Pascual to one-time it in through traffic.
Pascual continued to dominate in the Wheaton end netting her third goal of the game at 52:47 as she fought near the left post to slip it in past a sprawling Wolters. Sophomore Christine Ianni (Wilmington, Del./Tower Hill) then helped make it a 5-0 advantage for Mount Holyoke as she passed it to Pascual in the middle.
The homestanding Lyons capped the scoring at 64:17 on Pascual's fifth of the day and her third unassisted tally.
Mount Holyoke dominated in a number of categories for the game, holding a 40-9 advantage in shots and a 16-3 edge in penalty corners. In goal, senior Anne O'Byrne (Newbury, N.H./Proctor Academy) earned the victory, stopping three shots over 67:35 played. Sophomore Emma Ross (Glenshaw, Pa./Oakland Catholic) come on in relief for the final 2:25, but was not forced to make a save.
For Wheaton, Wolters made a number of outstanding saves in the game, finishing with 24 on the afternoon, including 11 in the second half.
Mount Holyoke is back in action on Tuesday when it travels to WPI for a 7pm contest against the Engineers. Wheaton is also in action on Tuesday in a 7pm contest at Springfield.
