Field Hockey Shoulders 1-0 Loss at WPI

Worcester, MA --- Stephanie Symecko (Cedar Knolls, NJ) registered her fifth goal of the season and Liz Dufresne (Worcester, MA) notched her second shutout on the year as WPI defeated visiting Mount Holyoke in NEWMAC field hockey action on Tuesday night.  With the win,  the Crimson and Gray improve to 4-6 overall and 2-2 in the conference while Mount Holyoke falls to 5-4 on the year and 2-1 in NEWMAC play.

The freshman Symecko scored what turned out to be the game winning goal at 18:33 as classmate Amy Misera (Hunt Valley, MD) crossed the ball to the far corner of the net after a penalty corner and Symecko calmly redirected it passed the goaltender.

Caroline Mazzola (Harvard, MA) had a great scoring opportunity at 47:20 when she beat the goalie to her right but the ball was just out of her reach for the tap in and trickled out of bounds just wide of the net.

WPI got a defensive lift late in the game when sweeper Madison Shugrue (Worcester, MA) made a game-saving defensive save of a rocket off the stick of Angelica Pascual (Lawrence, MA) following a Lyons penalty corner.

Dufresne turned in an outstanding performance turning away eight shots on net.  Lyons goaltender Anne O'Byrne (Newbury, NH) was solid in net making six saves.

Mount Holyoke out shot WPI 19-8 and held a 16-3 advantage in penalty corners. Kirsten Kilburn (North Branford, CT) paced all players with seven shots for Mount Holyoke while the Engineers were led by Megan Read (Wrentham, MA) and Mazzola with two shots each.

WPI is back on the field Saturday when it hosts Springfield at 10am on Homecoming while Mount Holyoke entertains MIT that same day at 1pm.
