MIT Claims NEWMAC Men's & Women's Track & Field Championships

SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. - The Massachusetts Institute of Technology men's track & field team compiled 250.50 points and the Engineers women garnered 224.333 points to win the 2014 NEWMAC Track & Field Championships, held today at Mount Holyoke College. It marks the 14th straight title for the MIT men and the sixth consecutive title for the Engineers women.

The WPI men finished second with 212 points, Coast Guard Academy was third with 146 points, followed by Springfield (88.5), Wheaton (52) and Babson (19). On the women's side, Wheaton finished second with 149.333 points followed by WPI (100.833), Coast Guard (74.5), Springfield (70), Wellesley (63), Smith (43), Mount Holyoke (27) and Babson (23).

This year's individual top performer awards were handed out to seven student-athletes.  Earning the women's Track Athlete of the Year was Wheaton's Ashante Little, who not only shattered the NEWMAC record in the 400-hurdles, but also posted the fastest time ever in Division III. Her mark of 58.56 eclipsed the previous record of 58.99 which was set back in 1989. Little also won the 100-hurdles.

Springfield's Amanda Martin took home Field Athlete of the Year honors, winning both the long and the triple jump in today's meet. MIT's Maryann Gong, a winner today in the 1,500-meter run, was the women's Rookie of the Year,

On the men's side, Coast Guard's Adam Scalesse and MIT's William Lee tied for Track Athlete of the Year honors. Scalesse recorded NEWMAC records in both the 110-hurdles and 400-hurdles, while Lee was the first across the line in the 200 and 400-meter dashes. He also was a member of the MIT's victorious 4x100 and 4x400 relays.

MIT's Ken Cooper was the Field Athlete of the Year, posting wins in the discus and hammer throw today, while Springfield's Alex Niemiec was the Rookie of the Year. He recorded victories in the 100-dash and the long jump.

For the homestanding Lyons of MHC, sophomore Camille Coklow became the NEWMAC champion in the 100-meter dash, crossing the line in a time of 12.47.

Mount Holyoke returns to action on May 2-3 when qualified members of the squad travel to Springfield to compete in the New England Division III Championships.
