Track & Field Excels at Smith Invitational

NORTHAMPTON, Mass. – Powered by a number of outstanding efforts, the Mount Holyoke College track & field team finished fourth of eight teams at the Smith College Invitational. Competing under sunny skies and warm temperatures, the Lyons saw four victories on the day, led by sophomore captain Camille Coklow.

Coklow (Chicago, Ill./The Latin School of Chicago) opened with a win in the 100-meter dash, recording a time of 12.48. That mark qualified her for the New England Division III Championships, the Open New England Championships and also the ECAC Championships.

She then claimed victory in the 200-meter dash, notching a New England Division III qualifying time of 26.49.

Junior captain Dana Fry (Tempe, Ariz./Miss Porter's School) got the action going at today's meet finishing first in the grueling 10,000 run. She posted a time of 39:40.73 in the event, which qualified her for the New England DIII Championships.

Also having an outstanding day was junior Amber Legare (Chicopee, Mass./Chicopee Comprehensive), who competed in seven events throughout the day. She won the long jump with a distance of 4.77 meters and also posted solid finishes in the shot put (10.44), the 100-meter hurdles (16.43) and the javelin (31.40) – of which she placed third in all three and qualified for NE DIII's in the hurdles.

Sophomore Elizabeth DeLeon (Boise, Idaho/Timberline) was third in the 1500-meter run, notching a personal-record time of 4:58.61, while senior Kathleen O'Connor (Southampton, Mass./Hampshire Regional) was fourth in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:16.19.

In the field events, senior captain Kristina Weld (Warwick, Mass./Pioneer Valley Regional) won the hammer throw with a distance of 43.29 meters. She also placed sixth in the shot put with a personal-record of 9.36 meters.

Additionally in the hammer throw, junior captain Jenny Spicola (River Edge, N.J./Walnut Hill School for the Arts) was fifth with a personal-best throw of 32.66 meters.

The Lyons return to action next weekend when they compete at the Aloha Relays, hosted by Bowdoin College. Action kicks off on Friday at 4pm and continues on Saturday at 11:30am.
