Track & Field Excels at Smith Benyon Invitational

NORTHAMPTON, Mass. – It was another outstanding weekend for the Mount Holyoke College track & field team as the squad finished sixth of 10 teams at the Smith College Benyon Invitational on Saturday. The Lyons were paced by a number of solid efforts, including a win by senior Kristina Weld in the 20lb. weight throw.

Weld (Warwick, Mass./Pioneer Valley Regional) threw a distance of 12.94 meters to win the weight throw. That mark was also a New England Division III Championship qualifying throw. Sophomore captain Camille Coklow (Chicago, Ill./The Latin School of Chicago) also claimed victory, winning the 60-meter dash in a time of 8.00. That time was also a New England DIII and ECAC qualifying time, which she also posted last week.

Also in the winner's category on Saturday was the Lyons Distance Medley Relay team, which posted a time of 13:10.03 for victory. Members of the foursome included first year Becca Rodgers (Tucson, Ariz./St. Gregory College Prepatory School), Coklow, first year Brianna Weir (Rome, N.Y./Rome Free Academy) and sophomore Elizabeth DeLeon (Boise, Idaho/Timberline).

Other relay highlights included the 4x200 team, which finished fourth with a time of 2:03.87. That foursome consisted of first year Tina Lugor (Greensboro, N.C./Dudley), juniors Sarah Fleming (Elk Grove, Calif./Sacramento Country Day School) and Gretchen Rowe (Marblehead, Mass./Marblehead), along with sophomore Janelle Portmann (Corinth, Maine/Corinth).

In other field events, junior Regina Crawford (Dorchester, Mass./Fenway) placed third in the shot put with a throw of 9.19 meters, while Weld took fifth (8.77m) and junior Jennie Ochterski (Middlefield, Conn./Cogincahug) was sixth (8.76m). Additionally, Ochterski was fifth in the weight throw with a distance of 11.66 meters.
