Track & Field Posts Strong Outing at Aloha Relays

BRUNSWICK, Maine - It was a record breaking day for the Mount Holyoke College track & field team, which finished sixth at the 2014 Aloha Relays, hosted by Bowdoin College. Both personal and school records were eclipsed in Saturday's action, paced by junior Amber Legare, who had an outstanding effort in the gruelling heptathlon.

Legare finished third or better in all seven events of the heptathlon at this year's meet, including wins in both the shot put and the javelin throw. She recorded a distance of 10.19 meters to claim victory in the shot, while throwing a mark of 30.99 meters to take the javelin crown. Legare also finished third in the other five events.

Overall, Legare posted a score of 3,594 points, which eclipsed the previous record of 3,534 set by Jacinta Edebeli in 2011.

Senior captain Kristina Weld had an outstanding day as well, finishing third overall in the hammer throw with an ECAC-qualifying distance of 44.75 meters. That mark eclipsed the long-standing school record of 44.69 meters, set by Nikki Shaw in 1996.

Personal best marks were also set by first year's Becca Rogers and Brianna Weir in the 800-meter run. Rogers finished fourth overall with a time of 2:24.80, while Weir was seventh with a mark of 2:28.56.

Senior Kathleen O'Connor also hit a milestone, finishing 10th in the 400-meter hurdles with a lifetime-best time of 1:13.52. She went on to help the 4x100 meter relay team to sixth overall with a time of 56.05.

Other members of the relay included senior Kate Brackett, junior Gretchen Rowe and sophomore Janelle Portmann.

Sophomore Camille Coklow continued her dominance in the 100-meter dash, winning with a time of 12.60, while sophomore Elizabeth DeLeon (1500-meter; 5:02.27) and junior captain Dana Fry (5000-meter; 19:24.82) each finished eighth in their respective events.

DeLeon would also help the 4x400 relay team to sixth with a time of 4:35.61. Other relay members included senior Lucia Garcia, first year Emma Tolerton and Rogers.

The Lyons return to action next Saturday when they host the 2014 NEWMAC Championships at the MHC Track & Turf Field. Action gets underway at 11am.
