Track & Field Opens Outdoor Slate at Wesleyan

MIDDLETOWN, Conn. – The Mount Holyoke College track & field team finally opened its outdoor season on Saturday, competing at the non-team scoring Wesleyan Invitational. The Lyons were paced by a number of outstanding efforts, including a school record and win by junior captain Dana Fry in the 3000-meter steeplechase.

 Fry (Tempe, Ariz./Miss Porter's School (Conn.) won her event in a school record time of 12:17.24. That mark eclipsed the previous record of 12:35.58, set by Felicia Cordeiro in 2012. Her victory and time also qualified her for the New England Division III Championships.

Junior Amber Legare (Chicopee, Mass./Chicopee Comprehensive) also had an outstanding day at the Wesleyan Classic, finishing third in all three events she competed. She posted a distance of 4.92 meters in the long jump, while also throwing a mark of 32.66 meters in the javelin. Legare then posted a time of 18.69 in the 100-meter hurdles.

Senior captain Kristina Weld (Warwick, Mass./Pioneer Valley Regional) had a great effort as well, finishing second in the hammer throw with a distance of 42.34 meters. Her throw also qualified her for the New England Division III Championships.

Other solid individual efforts came from junior Gretchen Rowe (Marblehead, Mass./Marblehead), who was fifth in the 400-meter dash with a time of 1:05.93 and seventh in the 200-meter dash with a mark of 29.87. Sophomore Camille Coklow (Chicago, Ill./The Latin School of Chicago) also finished well, placing second in the 100-meter dash with a time of 13.08.

Rounding out the day was a second place finish from the 4x400 meter relay team of first year Emma Tolerton (Rockville, Md./Richard Montgomery), sophomore Janelle Portmann (Corinth, Maine/Corinth), first year Brianna Weir (Rome, N.Y./Rome Free Academy)  and senior Lucia Garcia (Bakersfield, Calif./East Bakersfield). The foursome posted a time of 4:40.53.

The Lyons return to action next weekend as they make the short trip to Northampton to compete in the Smith College Invitational on Saturday at 11am.
