Track & Field Opens Season at Smith Winter Classic

NORTHAMPTON, Mass. - Anchored by a number of solid efforts, the Mount Holyoke College indoor track & field team had a strong opening to its season at the 2013 Smith College Winter Classic. The event, which was a non-team scoring affair, saw five individuals boast top-10 finishes on the afternoon.

Leading the way was senior Naomi Miller (Augusta, Maine/Cony), who placed third overall in the 600-meter run. She recorded a time of 1:45.56 in her event. Sophomore captain Camille Coklow (Chicago, Ill./The Latin School of Chicago) sprinted to fifth overall in the 200-meter dash, posting a time of 27.24.

Junior Gretchen Rowe (Marblehead, Mass./Marblehead) also had a solid showing, finishing ninth in the 600-run with a time of 1:52.65. Classmate Dana Fry (Avon, Conn./Miss Porter's School) ran to sixth in the 5000-meter run with a mark of 18:59.55, while the 4x400-meter relay team was sixth overall in a time of 4:46.17.

In the field events, senior Kristina Weld (Warwick, Mass./Pioneer Valley Regional) was sixth in the weight throw with a distance of 12.18 meters. She also led a strong effort in the shot put, placing 13th in the event with a mark of 8.56 meters.

Also finishing well in the shot put was junior Regina Crawford (Dorchester, Mass./Fenway) and first year Isa Rodriguez (Columbus, Ohio/Westerville School), who were 13th and 14th, respectively with throws of 8.51 meters and 7.48 meters.

The Lyons are now idle until January 18th when they open the 2014 portion of their schedule at the Wesleyan Invitational. That meet is set to begin at 11am.
