CHICOPEE, Mass. (Oct. 20, 2011) – First year midfielder Hannah Yee racked up two goals and an assist, as the Mount Holyoke College soccer team scorched Elms College 5-1 this afternoon at Leary Field. With the win, the Lyons snapped a four-match slide and improved to 4-9 on the year. Elms had prevailed in each of its previous three outings.
Both sides went scoreless until the 22:26 mark, when senior midfielder Mary Cooke collected a cross from junior midfielder Mallory Phaneuf and beat Hayley Zisk for her third tally of the year.
Mount Holyoke pulled away thanks to back-to-back goals by Yee. After knocking in a free kick from 20 yards out in the 35th minute, she used an assist from Cooke to put her team in front 3-0 at the 48:05 mark. The midfielder has been outstanding during her rookie campaign. In addition to her two goals today, she also netted a pair in the Lyons' 3-2 triumph over the Coast Guard Academy earlier this month. Her six goals are good for tops on the team.
Elms (6-5-3, 3-1-2 NECC) sliced the deficit to 3-1 in the 59th minute, when sophomore Victoria Cebula recorded an unassisted goal.
From there, it was all Mount Holyoke. The Lyons scored two more times down the stretch to ice things.
First year forward Amber Legare netted her second career goal off a centering pass from Yee in the 66th minute. Classmate Kara Singleton then took advantage of Cooke's second assist of the day to post her first collegiate goal with just over 10 minutes remaining in regulation.
Mount Holyoke finished with advantages in both shots (22-14) and corners (3-0). Junior goalkeeper Emily Shank made seven saves en route to her third win of the year. Zisk also ended the day with seven stops for the Blazers.
The Lyons (4-9-0, 2-5-0 NEWMAC) will begin their final push for the NEWMAC Tournament at Clark University on Saturday. Kickoff is slated for 2:00 p.m.
