Wellesley Needs Overtime to Put Away Soccer

WELLESLEY, Mass. (Sept. 24, 2011) – Senior midfielder Amanda Young found the back of the net 28 seconds into overtime to boost the Wellesley College soccer team to a 2-1 victory over NEWMAC foe Mount Holyoke College this afternoon at the Wellesley Soccer Field. Senior forward Margaret Hanmer scored her third goal of the season for the Lyons, who suffered their second straight heartbreaking setback.

Margaret Hanmer The Blue grabbed a 1-0 advantage at the 29:44 mark, when junior midfielder Megan Turchi sent a free kick ricocheting off the far post into the net.

Refusing to go away, Mount Holyoke knotted things up in 56th minute. A Wellesley defender blocked the initial shot by first year midfielder Hannah Yee, but the ensuing loose ball found its way to Hanmer, who knocked in her fifth career goal.

From there, both sides went scoreless until Young's golden goal in the first minute of extra time. Sophomore midfielder Ariel Chao got the play started with a long pass into the box. Her feed made its way to sophomore forward Lena Cardoso, who proceeded to set up Young.

Wellesley (2-5-2, 1-1-0 NEWMAC) outshot the Lyons 21-11 and finished with an 8-2 edge in corner kick opportunities. First year goalkeeper Claire Cerda made three saves for the Blue. At the other end, first year Taylor Bradley turned away 10 shots in her first collegiate start.

Hanmer and Yee recorded three shots apiece for the guests.

Mount Holyoke (2-3-0, 1-1-0 NEWMAC) will return home for a non-conference contest against nationally-ranked Union College on Wednesday at 7:00 p.m.
