Western New England Edges Soccer With Late Goal

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (Sept. 20, 2011) – Senior forward Sara McMurray scored two goals to lead the Western New England University soccer team to a 2-1 victory over Mount Holyoke College this afternoon at Suprenant Field. The forward found the back of the net for what proved to be the winner in the 79th minute. First year midfielder Hannah Yee recorded her second goal of the year for the Lyons.

Hannah Yee McMurray knocked in a penalty shot 8:48 into the contest to put the Golden Bears in front 1-0.

After nearly 70 minutes of scoreless play, Mount Holyoke broke through for the equalizer at the 74:46 mark, when Yee gathered a loose ball in the middle of the box and fired a shot past Western New England sophomore goalkeeper Victoria Trezise.

McMurray then recorded the winner off an assist from senior midfielder Samantha Lewis four minutes later.

Mount Holyoke's final gasp came in the waning minutes, when first year defender Amber Legare lined up a free kick from about 35 yards out. Her shot made its way over the outstretched arms of Trezise but ricocheted off the crossbar.

Yee and senior forward Margaret Hanmer each finished with three shots for the Lyons.

Western New England (1-6-1, 0-2-0 TCCC) picked up its first win of the year behind five saves from Trezise. The Golden Bears finished with slight advantages in both shots (12-11) and corner kicks (3-1). Junior Emily Shank turned away six shots for the guests.

Mount Holyoke (2-2, 1-0 NEWMAC) will wrap up its three-match roadtrip against NEWMAC rival Wellesley College on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
