SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. (Oct. 1, 2011) – Junior forward Cassey Muse scored two goals to lead 21st-ranked Wheaton College to a 7-0 victory over NEWMAC foe Mount Holyoke College this afternoon at the Mount Holyoke Soccer Field. Wheaton is now unbeaten in its last seven matches.
Both teams went scoreless until the 13:23 mark, when sophomore defender Rachelle Rodman headed in a pass from the corner from junior midfielder Samantha Cronin to put Wheaton in front 1-0.
Muse then extended the lead to 3-0 with back-to-back tallies off assists from senior forward Emily Vincunas and junior midfielder Kiersten Luber. Her first came in the 20th minute, when she beat Mount Holyoke's defense to the ball and slipped a shot around first year goalkeeper Taylor Bradley. Ten minutes later, she ripped a shot from the midfield just inside the left post.
The guests extended their cushion to 4-0 in the 44th minute, when senior forward Kaitlyn Mawicke scooped up a loose ball in the box and snapped a shot into the left side of the goal.
From there, Wheaton scored three more times in the second half to put things away.
Vincunas recorded the first just 32 seconds into the period. After gathering a pass from Mawicke in the middle of the box, she fired a shot through the hands of first year goalkeeper Mackenzie Randall.
Sophomore forward Kristina Braga pushed the lead to 6-0 in the 56th minute, when she dribbled around a Mount Holyoke defender and beat Randall from point blank range.
First year forward Shelby Benoit then lofted a shot over Randall from the right side to close out the scoring at the 81:29 mark.
Wheaton finished with overwhelming advantages in shots (39-7) and corner kick chances (14-2). Senior goalkeeper Lindsay Leddy made four saves en route to her fifth shutout of the season. At the other end, Bradley stopped a career-best 11 shots in the first half before giving way to Randall at the break. Randall ended the day with seven saves.
Junior forward Kiana Lussier led the Lyons with four shots. They have fallen in each of their last four outings.
Both squads will resume their NEWMAC schedules on the road on Tuesday. Mount Holyoke (2-5-0, 1-2-0 NEWMAC) will visit the Coast Guard Academy at 6:00 p.m., while Wheaton (8-1-2, 3-0-0 NEWMAC) will travel to Wellesley College at 4:00 p.m.
