SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. (Sept. 10, 2011) – The Mount Holyoke College soccer team kicked off its 2011 campaign in fashion, defeating Colby-Sawyer College 2-1 this afternoon in front of its home crowd. Trailing 1-0 at the break, the Lyons roared back behind second half goals by first year Hannah Yee and junior Kiana Lussier.
With the win, Mount Holyoke remained perfect in four all-time meetings with the Chargers. The Lyons had fallen in each of their last five season openers dating back to 2005, when they started the year 4-0.
Both sides went scoreless until the 29:21 mark, when sophomore forward Lauren Bernard found the back of the net from 25 yards out to put Colby-Sawyer in front 1-0. After collecting a pass from junior midfielder Colleen Coburn, she turned and fired a shot just inside the right post. It was her team-leading third tally of the fall.
Mount Holyoke still trailed 1-0 in the early stages of the second half before Yee knotted things up in the 57th minute. Junior midfielder Mallory Phaneuf got the play started with a throw-in from the right side. Her pass made its way to Yee, who took a couple steps toward the box and fired a shot toward the Colby-Sawyer net. Junior goalkeeper Ektra Sampson got her fingertips on the ball but deflected it just under the crossbar. It was Yee's first collegiate goal.
Lussier then recorded what proved to be the winner five minutes later. After receiving a pass from the midfield, she dribbled around a defender into the box and slipped a shot under Sampson. It was her first goal in a Mount Holyoke uniform.
The Lyons finished with advantages in both shots (22-13) and corner kicks (5-1). Junior goalkeeper Emily Shank made six saves en route to her first collegiate win. Meanwhile, Sampson turned away 10 shots at the other end.
Mount Holyoke (1-0, 0-0 NEWMAC) will return to action on Wednesday, when it hosts Amherst College at 7:00 p.m. Colby-Sawyer (2-3, 0-0 NAC) will open up its North Atlantic Conference slate at home against New England College on Friday at 4:00 p.m.
