NORTHAMPTON, Mass. (Sept. 17, 2011) – Junior midfielder Mallory Phaneuf collected a goal and an assist to lead the Mount Holyoke College soccer team to a convincing 3-1 triumph over longtime rival Smith College this afternoon. It was the NEWMAC opener for both squads.
With the win, Mount Holyoke improved to 2-1 on the year. It was the program's first win over Smith since the 2005 season. The teams finished in a deadlock last fall.
Both sides went scoreless until the 22:06 mark, when Phaneuf set up senior forward Margaret Hanmer with a cross from the right side.
Phaneuf then scored what proved to be the winner in the 72nd minute, when she scooped up a loose ball and blasted a shot past Smith senior goalkeeper Lindsey Gregor from about 10 yards out. It was her first goal of the year and second of her career.
Just over two minutes later, the Lyons scored one more time to ice things. This time, senior forward Mary Cooke found the back of the net off a feed from junior forward Kiana Lussier.
Smith (1-3, 0-1 NEWMAC) finally broke through for its lone goal of the day in the waning minutes, when senior forward Jenn Chang marched in alone and beat Mount Holyoke junior goalkeeper Emily Shank.
Shank made three saves for the guests, who finished with a 12-10 edge in the shot column. Gregor turned away two shots at the other end.
Mount Holyoke (2-1, 1-0 NEWMAC) will travel to Western New England University for a non-conference match beginning at 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday.
