Late Goal Propels MIT Past Soccer

SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. (Oct. 15, 2011) – The Mount Holyoke College soccer team was edged 1-0 by NEWMAC foe MIT this afternoon at the Mount Holyoke Soccer Field. Both sides went scoreless until the 77:52 mark, when first year midfielder Ambika Krishnamachar found the back of the net for what proved to be the lone goal.

Amber Legare Classmate Ashley Peter set up the winner with a short feed into the box from the right side. First year goalkeeper Mackenzie Randall came off her line in attempt to cut off the pass, but Krishnamachar beat her to the ball and knocked in her third goal of the season.

Mount Holyoke's best chance came in the 76th minute, when junior goalkeeper Meghan Wright made a leaping save on a shot by first year midfielder Hannah Yee. Wright was able to get just enough of the ball to deflect it into the crossbar and over the goal.

Yee led the Lyons with four shots. Meanwhile, first year Amber Legare and junior Kiana Lussier recorded three apiece.

MIT finished with advantages in shots (23-13) and corner kicks (4-3). Wright made seven saves en route to her seventh shutout of the year for the Engineers. Randall turned away 11 shots for Mount Holyoke.

Over the course of the day, donations were accepted, with all proceeds going to the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Foundation for breast cancer awareness. Fans were encouraged to wear pink and contribute to research initiatives. The Lyons sported pink socks and shoelaces.

Both squads are slated to host NEWMAC matches on Tuesday. Mount Holyoke (3-8-0, 2-4-0 NEWMAC) will face off against WPI at 4:30 p.m., while MIT (8-3-2, 3-1-2 NEWMAC) will tangle with Wellesley College at 4:00 p.m.
