NEW LONDON, Conn. (Oct. 4, 2011) – Senior forward Mary Cooke found the back of the net midway through double overtime to boost the Mount Holyoke College soccer team to a dramatic 3-2 triumph over the Coast Guard Academy this evening. With the win, the Lyons snapped a four-match slide and improved to 2-2 in NEWMAC play. It was their sixth straight victory over the Bears. They will enter the second half of their season with an overall record of 3-5.
First year midfielder Hannah Yee knocked in a pair of headers in the 16th and 23rd minutes to put Mount Holyoke in front 2-0 in the early going. Both goals came off of corner kicks from junior midfielder Mallory Phaneuf, who leads the Lyons with four assists thus far this season. Yee's four goals are good for tops on the team.
Coast Guard sliced the deficit to 2-1 at the 23:55 mark, when first year forward Lindsay Duplessis scored off an assist from senior forward Brittany Fifer.
The Bears then evened things up at 2-2 in the 31st minute on a goal by sophomore midfielder Jill Kelly. Senior forward Shannah Shelton was credited with the assist on the play.
After a wild first half, both squads went scoreless until the 112:03 mark, when Cooke buried her first career winner off an assist from junior forward Kiana Lussier.
Coast Guard finished with a 23-12 edge in the shot column.
First year goalkeeper Mackenzie Randall racked up 15 saves to preserve her first career victory for Mount Holyoke. Meanwhile, Mary Mills turned away seven shots for Coast Guard (4-5-1, 0-3-1 NEWMAC).
The Lyons (3-5-0, 2-2-0 NEWMAC) will return to action on Saturday, when they visit Babson College for a NEWMAC clash beginning at 1:00 p.m.
