Lacrosse Topped By Wesleyan

MIDDLETOWN, Conn. (Apr. 19, 2011) – Sophomore midfielder Lydia Kring recorded five goals and one assist, as the Wesleyan University women's lacrosse team topped Mount Holyoke College 19-6 this afternoon at Smith Field.

Annabel Barrett Mount Holyoke was paced by first year attacker Liz Randolph, who collected two goals and an assist. Junior midfielder Hilary Bombard and first year attacker Molly Macdonald found the back of the net two times apiece, while senior midfielder Georgia Markell added five draw controls.

Kring was aided up front by sophomores Kaylin Berger and Catherine Taibi, who contributed hat tricks. Junior midfielder Claire O'Brien pitched in with three helpers.

After falling behind 3-1 in the early going, Mount Holyoke reeled off three straight goals over a span of 1:22. Randolph highlighted the rally with back-to-back tallies. The second of those put the Lyons in front 4-3 at the 19:51 mark.

Wesleyan (6-7, 0-7 NESCAC) responded in a big way, pouring in 10 straight goals to gain control. Kring scored four times during the spurt, which spanned just over 15 minutes. The Cardinals took a 13-5 lead into the break and never looked back.

They finished with advantages in shots (37-15), draw controls (16-11) and ground balls (18-14). Junior goalkeeper Maggie Drowica totaled seven saves for the hosts. At the other end, first year Melissa Saale and sophomore Jamie Theophilos combined for 13 saves. Saale accounted for eight of those.  

Mount Holyoke (5-8, 2-3 NEWMAC) will put the finishing touches on its regular season schedule on Saturday, when it hosts Springfield College for a NEWMAC tilt beginning at 1:00 p.m.
