WESTMINSTER, Md. (March 16, 2011) – Junior attacker Hilary Bombard scored a free position goal with three seconds remaining in regulation to boost the Mount Holyoke College women's lacrosse team to a thrilling 11-10 triumph over the University of New England this evening at McDaniel College's Scott S. Bair Stadium. With the win, the Lyons closed out their spring break trip with a perfect 2-0 mark and improved to 3-2 on the year. It was their third straight victory.
Bombard finished the game with a career best five points on three goals and two assists. It was her first half trick of the year and sixth of her career. First year Liz Randolph also enjoyed an outstanding day for Mount Holyoke, racking up a career highs of six points, four goals and two assists. The attacker has scored three or more goals in three of her first five collegiate outings. Her 14 tallies are good for tops on the team.
The Lyons' remaining strikes came from junior attacker Alex Crean, sophomore midfielder Katya Planson, first year attacker Molly Macdonald and senior midfielder Vika Planson.
Senior midfielder Georgia Markell chipped in with five draw controls and four ground balls.
New England was paced by senior attacker Danielle Cate, who collected four goals. The Nor'easters also received solid production from first year attacker Sadie MacLean and sophomore midfielder Cara Cole, who notched two goals and one assist apiece.
After falling behind 2-0 just over three minutes into the contest, Mount Holyoke exploded for eight answered goals over the next 23 minutes. Randolph scored all four of her goals during the run, including three straight over a span of 3:13. The Lyons enjoyed an 8-3 advantage at the break.
Refusing to go away, New England (1-3, 0-1 TCCC) slowly chipped away at the deficit before eventually knotting things up at 10-10 on a MacLean tally with three minutes to go. Cate registered three goals to spark the comeback.
Then, with the game on the line, Mount Holyoke was awarded a free position opportunity with just six seconds remaining in regulation. Bombard took advantage, beating first year goalkeeper Samantha St. Pierre for what proved to be her fourth career winner.
Sophomore goalkeeper Jamie Theophilos piled up a career best 12 saves for the Lyons, who were outshot 26-21. Her biggest came with just 36 seconds to go, when she turned away a free position attempt from Cate. It was her third consecutive win. At the other end, St. Pierre amassed six saves for New England.
Mount Holyoke (3-2, 0-0 NEWMAC) will be off until Thursday, March 24, when it kicks off its home slate versus Bridgewater State University.
