Wheaton Pulls Away From Lacrosse

SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. (Apr. 9, 2011) – Junior attacker Hailey Colburn piled up eight points on four goals and four assists to lift the Wheaton College women's lacrosse team to a 22-9 victory over NEWMAC foe Mount Holyoke College this afternoon at the Turf Field.

Hilary Bombard Mount Holyoke was paced by junior midfielder Hilary Bombard, who scored three times and picked up five draw controls. It was her second hat trick of the year and seventh of her career. Senior midfielder Georgia Markell posted one goal, four ground balls and three draw controls. Meanwhile, first year Liz Randolph, junior Alex Crean, first year Naomi Miller, sophomore Katya Planson and sophomore Lindsey Kanno also found the back of the net for the hosts.

Nine players scored goals for Wheaton, which finished with advantages in both shots (33-25) and draw controls (18-15). Senior attacker Tess Meyer joined Colburn with four tallies, while first year attacker Leila Mills and junior midfielder Sydney Ferguson added three apiece. Wheaton also received a boost from sophomore midfielder Kristen Palmer, who totaled two goals, one assist and six draw controls. The guests totaled nine assists in the game.

After a tight first half, Wheaton pulled away with eight unanswered goals over a span of 10 minutes in the middle of the second stanza. Meyer scored three times to spark the rally. Her third gave the visitors an 18-6 edge at the 14:11 mark.    

Senior goalkeeper Marianna Marcellino made eight saves en route to her fifth win of the year. At the other end, first year Melissa Saale turned away five shots for the hosts.

Both squads will resume their NEWMAC schedules on Tuesday. Mount Holyoke (4-6, 1-2 NEWMAC) will visit Smith College at 5:00 p.m., while Wheaton (5-6, 2-1 NEWMAC) will host Babson College at 4:30 p.m.
