SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. (March 5, 2011) – Senior attacker Lindsay Stavola racked up five goals and four assists to boost the Skidmore College women's lacrosse team to a 12-3 victory over Mount Holyoke College this afternoon at Wachenheim Field. It was the first meeting between the programs since the 1992 season. The Lyons prevailed in each of their previous two contests against the Thoroughbreds.
Mount Holyoke was paced by junior attacker Alex Crean, who figured in on two goals, scoring one and assisting on another. Sophomore midfielder Lindsey Kanno and first year attacker Liz Randolph also recorded goals for the guests. Sophomore defender Kaitlyn Chin came up with four ground balls, while senior midfielder Vika Planson collected three ground balls and a pair of caused turnovers.
Stavola was aided at the offensive end by junior midfielder Lauren Madden, who posted a hat trick. Skidmore's remaining tallies came from sophomore attacker Lexi Melville, first year midfielder Summer Segalas, senior attacker Lauren McCarthy and first year midfielder Robin Fetterolf. Senior attacker Sydney Weill chipped in with a pair of helpers.
Kanno gave Mount Holyoke a 1-0 edge just 25 seconds into the game, when she found the back of the net for her first goal of the season. Skidmore responded with seven straight tallies to gain control. Madden recorded all three of her goals during the run, while Stavola scored twice and dished out three assists. Randolph put an end to the rally at the 6:11 mark, but the Thoroughbreds responded with two more unanswered goals to push their lead to 9-2 at the break.
Melville scored just under 10 minutes into the second stanza to put Skidmore in front 10-2. Crean sliced the deficit to 10-3 with a free position goal before Stavola closed out the day with two more tallies. Weill assisted on both strikes.
The Thoroughbreds (1-0, 0-0 LL) finished with slight advantages in shots (22-18) and draw controls (10-7). Junior goalkeeper Rachel Klein was credited with the win after stopping five shots in 54 minutes. At the other end, sophomore Jamie Theophilos made one save in the first half before giving way to first year Melissa Saale, who turned away four shots in her collegiate debut.
Mount Holyoke (0-2, 0-0 NEWMAC) will return to action on Thursday, when it travels to Westfield State University for a non-conference tilt beginning at 4:30 p.m.
