SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. (March 30, 2011) – First year Erin Conn, sophomore Daniela Marchitto and junior Ashley Prizio scored four goals apiece to lead the Eastern Connecticut State University women's lacrosse team to a 17-11 victory over Mount Holyoke College this afternoon at the Mount Holyoke Turf Field. Conn also added an assist for the Warriors, who snapped a two game losing slide.
The Lyons were paced by sophomore attacker Christina Horimoto and first year midfielder Brianne Phelan, who each posted hat tricks. Senior Vika Planson, junior Hilary Bombard, sophomore Lindsey Kanno, senior Bianca Young and sophomore Molly Macdonald also recorded goals for the hosts.
Eastern Connecticut State received solid production from sophomore midfielders Christina Rully and Taylor Buchanan, who struck for two goals apiece. Classmate Rachel Meotti collected game highs of six ground balls and five turnovers on the defensive end.
After falling behind 5-0 in the early going, Mount Holyoke exploded for five unanswered goals of its own to even things up. Horimoto got the rally started with three straight tallies over a span of 4:06. Phelan sliced the lead to 5-4 at the 4:26 mark, and Planson put the game in a deadlock with 3:54 remaining in the first half.
Prizio stopped the bleeding 31 seconds later, and Marchitto followed with her third goal of the opening period to give the Warriors a 7-5 edge at the break.
The teams went back-and-forth in the early stages of the second stanza, with neither side leading by more than two goals. An unassisted strike by Phelan cut the Lyons' deficit to 10-9 midway through the half.
From there, it was all Eastern Connecticut State. The Warriors outscored Mount Holyoke 7-2 down the stretch to put things away. Conn figured in on three of the goals, scoring two and assisting on another.
The Lyons fell despite finishing with advantages in shots (30-28) and draw controls (19-11). Sophomore goalkeeper Nancy Ibrahim stopped 14 shots for Eastern Connecticut State. At the other end, sophomore Jamie Theophilos and first year Melissa Saale split time between the pipes for the hosts. Theophilos came up with five saves, while Saale totaled a pair.
Mount Holyoke (3-5, 0-1 NEWMAC) will resume its three game homestand versus NEWMAC rival MIT on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. The Lyons will then have a week off before entertaining Wheaton College the following Saturday. Eastern Connecticut State (2-4, 0-1 LEC) is slated to visit Wellesley College next Wednesday at 4:30 p.m.
