  • Lacrosse Team Claims IWLCA National Academic Squad Accolades

    The Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association recently announced that the Mount Holyoke lacrosse team earned Academic Squad honors for the 2011 season. Bianca Young and Hilary Bombard were also named to the organization's Academic Honor Roll.

    Fourth year head coach Miriam Esber guided the Mount Holyoke lacrosse team to an overall record of 5-9 in 2011. The Lyons narrowly missed out on the NEWMAC Tournament with their 2-4 mark in league play.

    For the second year in a row, senior Bianca Young has been named to the IWLCA All-Region Second Team. Young anchored Mount Holyoke's defense, piling up team highs of 28 ground balls and 19 caused turnovers. Her five caused turnovers against Springfield were a career high.

    Prior to the annual athletics awards celebration last Thursday, 24 Mount Holyoke seniors representing 12 teams were honored as part of the College's third annual Scholar Athlete Reception. The recognition event highlighted those student-athletes who have excelled both on the field and in the classroom.

    The Mount Holyoke Department of Athletics hosted its annual awards celebration this evening in Chapin Auditorium. Individuals from all 14 varsity teams were honored. Volleyball player Kara Neidhardt served as the event’s emcee. Rider Lindsay Sceats earned the prestigious Alumnae Association Scholar-Athlete Award.

    The NEWMAC recently announced its 2011 Spring Academic All-Conference Teams. Twenty Mount Holyoke student-athletes were recognized for their achievements in their respective sports as well as in the classroom. Academic All-Conference Teams were selected for the sports of crew, track and field and lacrosse.

    Mount Holyoke suffered a 17-2 setback to NEWMAC foe Springfield in its regular season finale at the Turf Field this afternoon. Senior Vika Planson and junior midfielder Hilary Bombard recorded goals for the hosts. Prior to the contest, a Senior Day Celebration took place to honor Planson, Georgia Markell and Bianca Young.

    Mount Holyoke puts the finishing touches on its regular season slate versus NEWMAC foe Springfield Saturday afternoon (1:00 p.m.) at the Turf Field. In 22 previous encounters with the Pride, the Lyons have won four times. Last year, they picked up a dramatic 12-11 double overtime triumph at Springfield during the regular season before falling 17-10 in the NEWMAC Semifinals.

    Mount Holyoke suffered a 17-6 setback at Babson this afternoon. First year attacker Liz Randolph figured in on three of the Lyons' six goals, scoring one and setting up two more. Sophomore Molly MacDonald, junior Hilary Bombard, first year Naomi Miller, junior Alex Crean and senior Georgia Markell also found the net.

Sophomore attacker Molly MacDonald, senior midfielder Vika Planson and junior midfielder Hilary Bombard added two goals apiece for the Lyons, who downed the Pioneers for the third year in a row.

It was her second hat trick of the year and seventh of her career. Senior midfielder Georgia Markell added one goal, four ground balls and three draw controls.

In 35 previous meetings between the programs, Wheaton owns a 22-10 advantage. The two teams split a pair of games last spring. After falling 17-9 during the regular season, Mount Holyoke rebounded with a 15-6 triumph in the Quarterfinal Round of the NEWMAC Tournament.

    First year midfielder Naomi Miller has earned the Lyon of the Week award for the week of March 28 - April 3 after piling up a career best four goals in the lacrosse team's 15-12 triumph over MIT on Saturday. Her back-to-back tallies midway through the second half sparked a five goal explosion that put the Lyons in front for good.

    First year midfielder Naomi Miller exploded for career highs of four goals and one assist to lift Mount Holyoke to a 15-12 triumph over MIT this afternoon at the Turf Field. With their first NEWMAC win of the year, the Lyons halted a three game slide and improved to 4-5 on the year. It was their first victory over MIT since the 2003 season. The Engineers had come out on top in each of the previous eight meetings between the programs.

They suffered a 13-11 overtime setback in Cambridge, Mass. when the two squads met last spring. It was the Engineers’ eighth straight win over Mount Holyoke.

    Sophomore attacker Christina Horimoto and first year Brianne Phelan found the back of the net three times apiece in Mount Holyoke's 17-11 loss against Eastern Connecticut State this afternoon. Senior Vika Planson, junior Hilary Bombard, sophomore Lindsey Kanno, senior Bianca Young and sophomore Molly MacDonald also recorded goals for the Lyons.

    Mount Holyoke hosts non-conference foe Eastern Connecticut State this afternoon (4:30 p.m.) at the Turf Field. Last spring, the Lyons topped the Warriors for the first time in program history, winning by a score of 15-13. Eastern Connecticut State came out on top in both 2008 and 2009.

The Lyons were paced by sophomore midfielder Katya Planson, who collected two goals, three draw controls and a pair of ground balls. Classmate Christina Horimoto also found the back of the net twice, while senior midfielder Vika Planson chipped in with a pair of assists.

    First year attacker Liz Randolph found the back of the net 20 seconds into the second overtime period to push Mount Holyoke to a thrilling 12-11 triumph over Westfield State this evening at Golden Bear Stadium. Randolph finished the night with four goals, as the Lyons earned their first win of the season. It was the Lyons’ first win of the 2011 campaign.
  • Lacrosse Game Against Westfield State Shifted to WNEC

    Mount Holyoke's lacrosse game against Westfield State will now be played at Western New England on Thursday at 6:00 p.m. It was originally slated to take place at Westfield but was moved due to unplayable field conditions. Please note that the game time was also pushed back from 4:30 p.m.
