Field Hockey Goalkeeper Katie Gibson Named Lyon of the Week

Field Hockey Field hockey goalkeeper Katie Gibson has been named Lyon of the Week for the week of October 11-17. The junior racked up 28 saves in a perfect 2-0 week for Mount Holyoke.

Gibson turned away 13 shots in the Lyons' 3-0 victory over Castleton State College on Wednesday. In the process, she held the Spartans' explosive offense scoreless for the first this year. They had amassed 50 goals in their previous 12 matches. It was Gibson's fifth shutout of the year and 12th of her outstanding career.

She was was at it again in Mount Holyoke's stunning 3-2 overtime triumph over MIT on Saturday, when she amassed a season best 15 saves. Of those, five came in overtime. With the win, the Lyons put an end to MIT's nine match winning streak. The Engineers entered the contest sitting atop the NEWMAC standings with a perfect 5-0 mark. They had secured 12 straight victories over league foes, dating back to the middle of the 2009 campaign.

Gibson leads the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) with a goals against average of 1.13 and a save percentage of .587. Her five shutouts are also good for tops in the league. 

Mount Holyoke (7-5, 2-3 NEWMAC) will return to action on Tuesday, when it hosts WPI for a NEWMAC tilt beginning at 7:00 p.m.
