Wellesley Trips Up Field Hockey, 2-1

WELLESLEY, Mass. (Sept. 25, 2010) – The Wellesley College field hockey team handed New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) foe Mount Holyoke College a 2-1 setback this afternoon at the Wellesley Turf Field. It was the Lyons first loss in league play this season. They entered the contest riding a two match winning streak.

Wellesley (2-4, 1-1 NEWMAC) jumped out to a 1-0 advantage 9:23 into the contest, when sophomore defender Sally Scudder scored off a feed from classmate Allison Robbins.

The Blue extended their cushion to 2-0 on a goal by sophomore forward Emily Lewis in the early stages of the second stanza. Senior forward Katherine Cushing was credited with the assist on the play.

Mount Holyoke broke through for its lone goal in the 68th minute, when first year forward Stephanie Slysz registered her first collegiate goal off an assist from junior forward Jess Fajardo.

The Lyons fell despite edges in both shots (14-8) and penalty corner chances (7-5). Senior goalkeeper Sarina Sawyer made five saves for Wellesley. At the other end, junior Katie Gibson turned away five shots for the visitors.

Mount Holyoke (4-2, 1-1 NEWMAC) will put the finishing touches on a four match roadtrip on Wednesday at Amherst College. The non-conference tilt is slated to begin at 7:00 p.m.
