Match Program
THE LYONS: Mount Holyoke (1-0, 0-0 NEWMAC) kicked off its 2010 campaign with a thrilling 1-0 triumph over Washington College on Sunday. Defender Tricia Chase scored the lone goal of the match in the 62nd minute of play. It was the first ever meeting between the two programs. Chase found the cage for what proved to be the winner off an assist from midfielder Taylor Hedges at the 61:09 mark. The goal came as a result of a penalty corner opportunity. After receiving a feed at the top, Hedges slipped a pass to Chase on the right side. Chase proceeded to rip a shot from just inside the circle that deflected off the stick of a Washington defender over the shoulder of goalkeeper Shannon Davis. It was her first career match winner. Both sides finished with 11 penalty corners, and the Shorewomen came away with a slight 10-9 advantage in shots. Mount Holyoke goalkeeper Katie Gibson collected three saves en route to her eighth career shutout. The Lyons have now picked up wins in their last three season openers.
THE SHARKS: Simmons opened its 2010 season with a convincing 3-0 victory over Regis College on Monday. Forward Marianna Brown led the way with a pair of goals, while goalkeeper Renna Smith was credited with the shutout despite facing no shots. Forward TJ Cowin found the back of the cage for what proved to be the winner 25:42 into the contest off an assist from forward Brigid Rushe. Midfielder Katelyn Tighe assisted on both of Brown's tallies. The Sharks then fell 7-1 to MIT in their most recent outing on Thursday. Their lone goal came from Zoie Kaley, who used an assist from midfielder Lee Sutherland. Smith finished with four saves in the match. Simmons posted an overall record of 4-14 last fall and 5-13 in 2008. The Sharks compete in the North Atlantic Conference.
NEXT UP: Mount Holyoke will put the finishing touches on a three match homestand on Wednesday, when it entertains Wesleyan University at 7:00 p.m. Simmons is slated to host Bay Path College next Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
