Elms Sweeps Volleyball in Non-Conference Play

South Hadley, Mass. - October 17, 2019 - The Mount Holyoke College volleyball team was swept in three sets by visiting Elms College on Thursday evening in Howard Gymnasium, as the Lyons fall to 5-16 overall, while the Blazers improve to 12-8 on the year.

Leading the Lyons was sophomore Sarah Bishop (Rutland, Mass.), as she totaled seven kills and seven digs, while Marianne Simon (Miami, Fla.) produced five kills and seven digs as well. Alexandra Keough (Endicott, N.Y.) handed out a team-best 14 assists, while Chelsea Galicia (San Luis Obispo, Calif.) registered a team-best nine digs for the hosts. Gabrielle Davis (Keller, Texas) also finished with four kills and four blocks.

The Blazers jumped out to an early 7-2 start to force a timeout from the Lyons bench, before taking a 14-4 lead midway through the match on a kill from Hayley Castanos (Santa Ana, Calif.). From there, Elms used a quick five-point burst to take a 19-6 lead, before a service error from Mount Holyoke College and a kill from Laura Jensen (Torrance, Calif.) sealed the 25-12 set victory.

Trading points to begin set two, the Blazers took a 10-6 lead on a kill from Jaylianne Ramos (Tao Alto, Puerto Rico), before the Lyons pulled to within one, making it 12-11 on a service ace from McKenna Crosby (Jonesborough, Tenn.). Elms would then take back a five-point advantage, which the Lyons would cut down to three on a kill from Davis, but Ramos picked up a pair of kills late and delivered the final blow to give the Blazers a 25-19 victory and 2-0 match lead.

The third set was the closest between the two squads, as the Blazers took an early 13-9 lead, but the Lyons fought back and made it a one-point game on another kill from Davis. After a kill from Bishop and an error from the visitors made the game even at 21 apiece, Elms tallied back-to-back kills to finish the 27-25 set victory and three-set sweep.

Up next, the Lyons will return to Howard Gymnasium on Tuesday, October 22 when they will host Clark in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play at 7 p.m.
