Volleyball Sweeps Mass. Maritime in Non-Conference Showdown

Buzzards Bay, Mass. - September 10, 2019 - Traveling to the Massachusetts Maritime Academy on Tuesday evening, the Mount Holyoke College volleyball team defeated the Buccaneers, 3-0, and earned their second win of the season in the Clean Harbors Center.

With the win, the Lyons are now 2-4 overall, while Mass. Maritime falls to 1-2. Mount Holyoke College won by the set scores of 25-11, 25-9, 25-11. 

Senior Sasha Simine (Kitchener, Ont.) led the offensive force with seven kills on nine swings, hitting .776 for the match, as Gabrielle Davis (Keller, Texas) added six kills, hitting .417. First-year Marianne Simon (Miami, Fla.) had a team-high nine digs, while Brayden Walden (McKinney, Texas) handed out 13 assists and had four aces.

The Lyons jumped out to a 6-2 lead following back-to-back kills from Simon and Davis, forcing the Buccaneers to take a timeout. Coming out of the break, Mount Holyoke College went on a 10-2 run which included a pair of aces from Simon to provide the visitors a 16-4 advantage. Mass. Maritime made it an eight-point game, trailing 19-11, before a pair of aces from Sarah Bishop (Rutland, Mass.), followed by kills from Davis and Simine closed the 25-11 set victory for the Lyons. Bishop would go on to finish the match with a team-best six aces.

Mount Holyoke College took a 10-2 lead to start the second set following another ace from Bishop. Following an error from the Lyons, Mount Holyoke College then went on a 9-0 run to take a 19-3 lead following an ace from Simine. After a kill from McKenna Crosby (Jonesborough, Tenn.) made it 23-7, Simon closed out the set with an ace and gave the Lyons a 2-0 advantage in the match.

Much like in the first two sets, Mount Holyoke jumped out to an early lead in set three, taking a 9-3 lead on a service error. Holding on to a five-point lead, the Lyons started to build distance as they used a 7-0 run, capped by a kill from Davis and an attack error from Mass. Maritime to make it 22-10, Mount Holyoke College. From there, kills from Davis, Simine and another ace from Bishop sealed the 25-11 set win and the three-set sweep.

Up next, Mount Holyoke College will return home to Howard Gymnasium on Thursday, September 12. The match is set to begin at 7 p.m.
