Worcester, Mass. - October 1, 2019 - The Mount Holyoke College volleyball team dropped a 3-0 decision at WPI in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play at Harrington Auditorium on Tuesday evening. With the loss, the Lyons are now 3-12 on the year with an 0-5 mark in league play, while the Engineers improve to 8-6 overall with a 3-2 mark in the NEWMAC.
The Lyons fell by the set scores of 12-25, 19-25, 11-25.
In the loss, Mount Holyoke College was led by eight kills from Sasha Simine (Kitchener, Ont.), who hit .571 in the match, while Alexandra Keough (Endicott, N.Y.) handed out 10 assists. Both Marianne Simon (Miami, Fla.) and Chelsea Galicia (San Luis Obispo, Calif.) registered a team-high 11 digs, while Keough and Sarah Bishop (Rutland, Mass.) each had a pair of service aces.
Simine put down a kill to give the Lyons an early 3-2 lead in the first set, but the Engineers would eventually gain an 8-6 advantage, forcing a timeout from the Mount Holyoke College bench. Coming out of the break, WPI went on a 4-0 run to make it 12-5, before Gabrielle Davis (Keller, Texas) picked up a kill and Keough notched one of her two aces to make it 20-10, WPI. From there, the Engineers were able to seal the 25-12 win despite a late kill from Simine.
A 6-0 run in the early stages of the second set gave WPI a 7-1 lead, but an ace from Simon, followed by a kill and an ace from Simine made it a three-point game, WPI leading 8-5. Trailing 16-12, the Lyons fought all the way back and made it a one-point set on back-to-back kills from Bishop and Simon, making it 19-18, WPI. From there, the hosts were able to go on a 4-0 run before taking the second set, 25-19.
The Engineers controlled a 10-5 lead to start the third set, but once again the Lyons made it a two-point game, still trailing 10-8. From there, WPI opened a 15-8 advantage before eventually controlling a 20-9 lead late in the match. From there, McKenna Crosby (Jonesborough, Tenn.) and Simine picked up kills but WPI closed the set, 25-11, and the match, 3-0.
Up next, Mount Holyoke College will travel to Cambridge, Mass. on Saturday, October 5 and will take on MIT and Husson beginning at 12 p.m.
