Volleyball Wraps-Up Play at 2013 Hall of Fame Tournament

SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. – The Mount Holyoke College volleyball team wrapped up play at the 2013 Volleyball Hall of Fame Tournament on Saturday. The Lyons, who co-hosted the event with Smith College, fell to Colby by a 3-1 score and later dropped a 3-1 decision to Bridgewater State. With the defeats, MHC slips to 10-16 on the season. Colby moved to 8-11 after the match, while the Bears improved to 14-17.

In the 9am opener against the Mules, senior Martina Kneifel posted a match-best 16 kills to pace the Lyons, who dropped the first two sets by scores of 25-22 and 25-20. MHC battled back to take a 25-23 win in the third set, but Colby retaliated with a 25-13 victory to close out the match. Colby saw both Kim Donaldson (11 kills) and Alexa Busser (10 kills) reach double-figures.

Colby's Kate Pleasants added a match-high 24 assists, while All-Tournament Team selection Sarah Arvidson chipped in with a match-best 30 digs.

For Mount Holyoke, Kneifel was named to the All-Tournament Team, adding 12 digs to go along with her 16 kills. Sophomore Natalie Lyon chipped in with 20 assists and 11 digs, while junior Kaleen Iwema added 12 digs.

 The Lyons then squared off against Bridgewater State in the afternoon. The Bears jumped out to a quick 2-0 set lead, taking them by a 25-19 and 25-23 margin. MHC refused to quit and rebounded with a 25-19 victory, but they could not hold off BSU, which took a 25-15 win in the fourth set.  All-Tournament Team selection Hannah Maymon led the offensive effort for the Bears, laying down 15 kills.

BSU's Melanie Appleman added a match-best 31 assists, while Kristen Robillard (12 digs) and Danielle Dean (13 digs) combined for 25 digs in the game.

For Mount Holyoke, Kneifel paced the effort once again, dropping in 13 kills and a match-best 17 digs. Lyon added 27 assists and 12 digs, while sophomore Emma Sweeting had 11kills and 15 digs. Additionally, first year Athena Donta chipped in with three service aces and 15 digs.

Mount Holyoke returns to action on Tuesday, when it travels to Smith for a 7pm NEWMAC contest. Colby is also in action on Tuesday with a 7pm match at Maine Maritime, while Bridgewater State closes out its season on November 2 when it travels to MCLA for a 1pm game.
