Volleyball Notches 3-1 Win Over WPI in Season Finale

Worcester, MA --- Senior Martina Kneifel (Oro Valley, Ariz.) stuffed the stat sheets with 16 kills, 20 digs and seven aces as visiting Mount Holyoke defeated WPI 3-1 in the 2013 NEWMAC volleyball season finale for both teams on Saturday afternoon.  MHC took the match by scores of 25-13, 25-22, 15-25, 25-16.

The Lyons end their season with a 11-17 record and a 1-9 conference ledger after their first NEWMAC win since 2011.  WPI completes the 2013 campaign with a 7-21 overall mark and a 0-10 record in league play.

Kneifel did much of her damage in the opening set.   With the Lyons leading 7-5, she rattled off three consecutive aces to highlight a 6-0 run.  After WPI climbed backed to 18-13, Kneifel's serving sparked a 7-0 spurt to close out the first set.

The second set was the most tightly-contested of the match with 10 ties and four lead changes.  MHC took the set on a kill by Emma Sweeting (Hasting-on-Hudson, NY).   WPI began the third set with a 5-0 run and never trailed while the guests pulled ahead 9-4 to start the fourth set and never let the Engineers get closer than three points.

Sweeting added eight kills in the winning effort while Kristina Weld (Warwick, MA) smacked five.  Natalie Lyon (Oakton, VA) doled out a match-best 34 assists and Kaleen Iwema (Wadsworth, IL) and Athena Donta (Hadley, MA) added 16 and 12 digs respectively.

Senior Holly Ganser (Seward, AK) led the WPI offense with eight kills and just two errors in 19 attempts (.316 hitting percentage).  Jenny Wallace (Holden, MA) totaled seven kills and nine digs with Maddy Werth (Bedford, MA) added six kills, a pair of solo blocks and a block assist.

Additionally, Caroline Meyer (Easton, MA) handed out 21 assists and Gyneth Campbell (Albany) added a career-best eight digs. Senior Sarah Cook (New Paltz, NY) pitched in with three kills and seven digs in her final career match.
