Volleyball Shoulders Loss to Westfield State in Hall of Fame Opener

SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. - Despite a 16-kill performance from senior Martina Kneifel, the Mount Holyoke College volleyball team could not battle back, falling 3-1 (25-23, 21-25, 16-25, 15-25) to Westfield State in the opening game of the 2013 Hall of Fame Invitational, hosted by MHC and Smith. The Owls move to 16-12 on the season with the victory, while the Lyons fall to 10-14 overall.

Kneifel (Oro Valley, Ariz./Canyon del Oro) recorded 16 kills to go along with 19 digs in the match, which saw MHC win the first set. She also chipped in with a service ace and a block solo. Junior Kaleen Iwema (Wadsworth, Ill./Warren Township) added eight kills and 15 digs, while sophomore Emma Sweeting (Hastings-on-Hudson, N.Y./Hastings) added six kills and five digs.

Additionally, first year Natalie Lyon (Oakton, Va./Flint Hill School) recorded 30 assists over four sets in the contest, while also adding five digs.

In the other 5pm game of the action at Mount Holyoke, Amherst posted a 3-1 (23-25, 25-21, 25-19, 25-15) victory over Wellesley, snapping the Blue's 12-game unbeaten streak entering Friday night's action.
