Volleyball Suffers NEWMAC Loss at Coast Guard

NEW LONDON, Conn.-- Senior Kelsey DePorto had a match-high 17 kills leading Coast Guard to its fifth straight win, a 3-0 victory over Mount Holyoke in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) match.

Coast Guard won by scores of 25-16, 25-13 and 25-17 to improve to 15-5 overall and 4-2 in the NEWMAC while Mount Holyoke dropped to 8-7 overall and 0-7 in the conference.

The Bears scored eight of ten points to open up a close game in the opener turning a 15-13 edge into a 23-15 lead before winning 25-16.

In the second game, the Lyons jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead. The Bears would tie the game 10-10 and later would score 13 for the final 15 points for the 25-13 win.

Coast Guard led 13-11 in third before scoring six straight and eight of the next nine for a 21-12 lead en route to the 25-17 victory.

Sophomore Ashley Dumont added six kills for Coast Guard while freshmen Rebekah Muller and Susan West each added five kills. Muller had a team-high 13 digs while Muller added ten in the win.

Sophomore Maggie Hine led the Bears with a match-high 23 assists.

Sophomore Emma Sweeting led Mount Holyoke with nine kills to go with seven digs while junior Kaleen Iwema led the Lyons with 14 digs. Junior Stephany Yang added a team-high 11 assists.

Coast Guard is back in action on Friday night when they host Worcester State at 7 p.m. during the opening night of the two day Bear Classic. The Lyons return to action on Saturday when they host the Seven Sisters Volleyball Championship.
