Volleyball Moves to 5-0; Beats Mitchell & Saint Joseph

WEST HARTFORD, Conn. - The Mount Holyoke College volleyball team continued its winning ways on Saturday, posting wins over Mitchell College (3-0) and the University of Saint Joseph (3-1) in tri-match action at USJ. With the victories, the Lyons move to 5-0 on the season.

Game one against Mitchell saw sophomore outside hitter Emma Sweeting record a match-best 10 kills to lead the way. She added six digs and a pair of service aces as the Lyons took the first set by a 25-14 margin. MHC went on to claim a 25-11 win in set two before edging Mitchell in the final frame by a 25-21 score.

Junior libero/defensive specialist Kaleen Iwema added seven kills, three aces and nine digs, while senior middle hitter Kristina Weld had five kills.

Match two against the host BlueJays proved to be a battle as the Lyons took the first set with ease (25-14). In second set, MHC won by a close 25-23 margin, but Saint Joseph battle back to force a fourth set with a 25-19 victory in the third. Mount Holyoke closed out the match in the final set, taking it by a 25-18 score for the win.

Sweeting added nine kills and four digs, while first year setter Natalie Lyon added 10 assists and 10 digs. Iwema chipped in with seven kills and a match-best 16 digs, while junior setter Stephany Yang had 10 assists and 13 digs.

Mount Holyoke returns to the court on Tuesday in a 7pm contest at MCLA.
